Liné GriffithsAND so WE ARE OFF.....to yet another exiting year of mountain biking.  

2013 Started with a spectacular mountain biking festival hosted by Dryland. It seems that the Attakwas revealed who trained over the holidays and who could fix punctures! Congratulations to Christoph Sauser (Team Specialized) who won the marathon race in a new record time of 4:56;29 and Ariane Kleinhans (Team RECM) who won the ladies category in a time of 5:42;29. 

We have a promising 2 weeks of XC racing lined up starting this Saturday with the first race of the Western Cape XC Series followed by the first leg of the National Cross Country series on the 9th of February (more detail in the newsletter). I would like to encourage all of you to grab the opportunity and come and race the tracks! If not - come and watch the riders race, I am sure it will be a show case of talent and determination!

From my side, I would like to thank all the people involved behind the scenes, working on a volunteer basis to get our sport running smoothly - you all know who you are!

Licences, Licences and more Licences . . .
We are being flooded with enquires about licences for 2013. In an effort to bring clarity to the matter - here are the steps regarding licensing for Mountain Bikers in SA for 2013.

Step 1 - Take out a CSA membership for 2013 on the www.cyclingsa.com website for R75. This license will be valid for the whole of 2013. If you do not have a valid CSA licence the race organiser can ask you take out a CSA Day Licence of R35 per day if the event is registered through CSA etc. You do not have to join a club (as in the past) before you can take out a CSA licence. 

Step 2 - If you wish to take your racing to the next level and compete at any international events such as the African Continental Champs, World Masters Champs and World Champs, you have to "upgrade" your CSA licence to a Racing Licence. This can also be done on the CSA website. Here it becomes necessary that you are a valid member of a club. 

Please note:

  1. You have to have a racing licence if you wish to take part in the U23 or Elite categories at any SA National XC race this year as these categories are UCI races and therefor International.
  2. If you are aiming to take part in the Masters World Champs - be careful of the rule that you are not allowed to take part if you posses of any UCI points by the date of the race. Therefor do not enter any SA National XC Cup in the Elite category - race in your age group! Also be aware of the UCI points you can obtain if you race the ABSA CAPE EPIC or the SABIE WORLD CUP MARATHON in the Elite category - same rules apply there.

Provincial XC Series
A quick reminder of the Western Cape XC Series dates for 2013! 
  1. February 2nd – Willowbrigde (Durbanville)
  2. March 16th – Jonkershoek (Stellenbosch)
  3. April 7th – Oudtshoorn
  4. May 12th – Franschoek
  5. June 8th - Willowbridge (Durbanville) – Western Cape Champs
WP Colours for 2012
Those who obtained WP Colours for the 2012 season in either the series, champs or at SA’s will receive their colours at the first XC event this Saturday the 2nd of February held  at Willowbridge (Durbanville). The list of recipients is on the WP website and details were sent to each individual. If your name is on the list and you still did not receive your mail – that means we could probably not read your handwriting and could not send it! Please send us a mail on wpmountainbike@gmail.comto get the details.

Colours will be handed out during the medal ceremony of the applicable age category i.e. the Sprogs WP Colours will be handed out at the same time as the Sprogs medals during the event on Saturday.
WP Colours for 2013
It's been confirmed - you will receive Western Cape Colours next year if you qualify according to the same set of rules you had to do in the past to qualify for Western Province Colours.

To recap - A rider will obtain provincial colours if they reach one or more of the following:

  1. A top 3 position in their age group in the Provincial Series
  2. A top 3 position in their age group at the Provincial Champs
  3. Competing at the SA Champs, African Continental Champs or other International XC event for SA.

The specific rules are posted on the CSA website (www.cyclingsa.com)
Western Cape XCE & XCO #1
The first instalment of the Western Cape XC series is on the 1 - 2nd of Feb 2013.

The races will be held at the Slammer track opposite Willowbridge and Chris Willemse Online shop. For the race information pack including maps, schedules etc. please visit the www.wp-cycling.co.za website or download it here. 

Registration can be done on Friday 1st of Feb at Chris Willemse Online between 10:00 - 18:00 or Saturday at the venue from 07:00 AM.

  • Remember you CSA licence nr. (Make sure it has been renewed for 2013)
  • CSA Day Licences (R35) is compulsory if you do not have a valid CSA licence - excl. Sports, Nippers, Sprogs and Sub-Junior Cats.
  • A R20 number board deposit will be charged and can be collected upon return of the board to the registration office after completion of your race. 
  • There will be no race entry fee for the XCE.
The XCE individual timed runs will start on Friday 17:30 followed by the knock out heats at 18:30. Prize giving will be on Saturday before the medal ceremony of the Elite men's race. 

Race entry fees = R50 for Nippers, Sports and Single Speed, R100 for all other categories.

SA NATIONAL XC CUP #1
The National XCO (incl. XCE) and DH race series will start on the 9 - 10th of Feb at the Slammer track opposite Chris Willemse Online. 

You can enter online till Wednesday 06 Feb on the www.cyclingsa.com site. 

XCO Late entries and Registration can be done at the Chris Willemse Online store on Friday 8 Feb from 10:00 - 18:00.

  • Please remember your VALID CSA MEMBERSHIP NR!
  • CSA Day Licences will be compulsory if you do not have a valid CSA licence - all age groups excl. Nippers, Sprogs, Sub-Juniors, Sport and Single Speed Categories. 
  • Pre-Entries = R250
  • Late-Entries = R300
  • Nippers, Sprogs, Sub-Juniors, Sport and Single Speed Categories can enter on Friday = R150.

The XC Eliminator race will be free of charge - EVERYONE WELCOME!!

  • Timed individual time trials will start at 17:30
  • Knock out heats will start at 18:30
